Thinking of going back to school with all of these celebrations, festivals and fun things to do in the Smokies just doesn’t make sense! While there is still plenty of time, plan to head to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg for one last summer weekend getaway. You and the kids will be so glad you did!

1-7: Dollywood’s Great American Summer Celebration – Dollywood welcomes families for a fun-filled summer featuring long play days 10 a.m.-10 p.m., fireworks and tons of fun!  Check out these great water rides for beating the heat!  Dollywood.com

1-14: Free Parkway Trolley – Nine weeks of free trolley rides! Get on and off the open air trolley as often as you’d like along the Parkway between lights #1-#10. Trolley runs from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. every day.

1-31: Celebrate Freedom – Businesses throughout the city of Pigeon Forge dedicate the month of August to uniformed men and women with special discounts and extra savings. Discounts available for all military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and other emergency responders. Present proof of service identification at participating businesses.

1-31: Titanic First Public Display of Bandmaster Wallace Hartley’s RMS Titanic Violin – See the most prized RMS Titanic artifact ever recovered. View all Titanic events.

4-6:  42nd Annual Tennessee Square Dance Convention – W.L. Mills Conference Center

6: 7th Annual Smoky Mountain Cornhole Tournament & Stringtime in the Smokies – Beginning at 11 a.m., gather at Old Mill Square for fun, games and prizes. Registration is required for Competitive & Amateur Divisions Cornhole Tournaments, and registration opens in June. At 7 p.m., the music starts and you are welcome and encouraged to bring a lawn chair and relax with some great entertainment. Visit online for registration information.

6, 13, 20, 27: Gatlinburg Farmers Market – Shop our local farmer’s market for locally grown fruit and veggies, and locally made good stuff in the Gatlinburg Arts & Crafts Community at the Covered Bridge on Glades Road. August 27-28

27: Back to School Cruise In – From 4-9 p.m. at The Diner in Sevierville, there will be cool cars, DJ entertainment, drawings and prizes, and great food. The Diner is a locally owned, one of a kind American diner located on Winfield Dunn Parkway nears Lowe’s Home Improvement.

27: Veterans Homecoming Parade – Gather along the Pigeon Forge Parkway for this 9 a.m. parade created to salute American veterans. Parade begins at Dollywood Lane at light #8 and travels through Jake Thomas Road at light #5.

27-28: Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion – Meet up with ‘Jeepers’ from all over the country at LeConte Convention Center in Pigeon Forge for this annual event hosted by the Smoky Mountain Jeep Club. Jeep owners and enthusiasts welcome! View their official web site for updates and event details.
